Jyotiṣavidya

Jyotiṣavidya is the Vedic and Hindu science and study of the celestial bodies, who are divine emanations. In Sanskrit, jyoti refers to light, flame, radiance — both physical and pneumatic; īśa means lord or supreme, and refers to the source of all creation. Vidya is a system of correct knowledge, like science, or scholarship — it is tied fundamentally to perception. Vidyas are considered mystical as well as material.

What Is a Planet?

The planets are gods. They are referred to as graha, which means to seize, grasp, or take hold of. They possess us. A graha is also "one that moves," as opposed to the stars, who stay fixed in the heavens. The Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies, are material forms of emanations of the divine.

The Karmic Coil

In this system, which is fundamentally and irreducibly a religious, empirical system, the movement of the celestial bodies is tied to what I call the karmic coil. It allows us to make an anatomical study of our souls and our lives vis-à-vis the constant theatre of divine influences that possess us. Jyotiṣavidya provides a blueprint for our development, as well as a map to our soul, which has lived many lives. Using this study of divine influences, we can trace karmic currents in our life, and enhance knowledge of our svadharma — our special purpose, gifts and burdens passed through our lives or lineage.

How?

Jyotiṣavidya uses a wide and deep plumbing range of methods, including formulae and counting sequences, to chart this map. In theory, it is possible to itemise every element in our lives this way, to some degree; however, the dance between matter and spirit manifests according to our actions above all — this is karma. Crucially, we possess free will. Your chart will only account for a portion of your reality. It is your actions that truly matter. Jyotiṣavidya allows us to understand the waters we are wading in. It brings context to joy, suffering, trial, error, growth. It is a tool for communication with the divine through matter and action. But we are always the builders of our own fates.

Transits & Delphic Counsel

Transits are used to assess periods of movement and activation in a life, to see when certain choices are more supported, when caution is useful, to see when pressures may arise or circumstances may be likely to shift. Rather than dictating a course of action, they help situate a decision within its wider moment and clarify the conditions one is moving through and where effort may be most intelligently placed.
